Hybrids key to faster, more affordable decarbonisation, says Intergas at UK Parliament event

During an informal roundtable in the UK Parliament, Intergas Heating convened industry leaders and policymakers to discuss the critical role hybrid heat pumps can play in the UK’s decarbonisation strategy.

Intergas is a domestic heating solutions manufacturer with five decades of experience in making groundbreaking technological advances in the heat pump sector.

The event comes as the Government reviews its Boiler Upgrade Scheme, currently under consultation, which has currently excluded hybrids. Hybrids combine an electric heat pump with a boiler, offering a highly efficient, low-carbon solution with minimal household disruption.

The message from the discussion was clear: hybrid heat pumps are the perfect first step towards full decarbonisation and must be part of the solutions that can count on public support by the UK government. Shadow Minister for Energy Security Andrew Bowie MP called hybrids “a no-brainer” due to their significant gas savings and minimal disruption for consumers.

The pledge of Intergas is in line with a new report that the Dutch heating sector recently published, Hybrid Heat Pumps: A Practical Solution for Lower Energy Bills, highlighting findings from trials in partnership with the Dutch Government and the installation sector. The trials show that hybrids will cut emissions by an average of 75% and deliver consumer savings of around €1,000 annually.

Deploying hybrids at scale would enable rapid emissions reductions across a broad swathe of UK housing stock and significantly contribute toward the Government’s heat pump installation target.

Managing Director of Intergas, Arno La Haye said:

“The appetite for hybrid solutions in Parliament is clear, and we were pleased to share Intergas’ trial results from the Netherlands, demonstrating the real benefits for both consumers and Government.”

“Hybrid systems require only a third of the financial support needed for full electric heat pumps while still achieving an average 75% reduction in CO₂ emissions. This means the UK can meet its climate targets faster and more cost-effectively – helping three times as many households to decarbonise and lower their energy bills with the same investment.”

Quote from Shadow Secretary of State Andrew Bowie MP:

“Supporting hybrid heating solutions is a no-brainer. Consumers need flexibility and practical options today, net zero isn’t an overnight achievement, it’s a journey.

Hybrids offer a realistic, low-disruption path forward, helping households decarbonise step by step without forcing choices that aren’t yet viable for everyone.”

The event underlined growing political support for pragmatic, consumer-focused solutions to decarbonisation. With households facing mounting energy costs and the UK needing rapid, scalable emissions cuts, hybrids present a practical approach that keeps all pathways open to full decarbonization while offering immediate savings, lower upfront costs and faster progress toward national targets.
