5 tips to save energy, whatever the weather!

Making sure your boiler and central heating system work efficiently means you’ll use less fuel and, you’ll be pleased to hear, your heating bills will be lower!

So how can you ensure the system is working as well as it should? Quite simply, maintain it properly, all year round. It’s important to look after your whole heating system to extend its lifespan and keep it running as smoothly as possible – for as long as possible.

Use your boiler regularly

You may not realise this, but you should turn on the heating throughout the year – even in the summer. Just ten minutes of heating will keep the mechanical parts in good working order. Of course, you may be using your boiler all year anyway to keep the water hot, but a quick run through of the radiators will ensure a smooth transition back into the cooler autumn.

Get your boiler serviced

Have your boiler serviced each year to make sure it’s running efficiently. The engineer can clean and test your boiler – and let you know if it needs any repairs. That way, you can tackle potential problems before they become dangerous or costly.

Make the most of heating controls

Using a room thermostat and thermostatic radiator valves properly can save you a huge amount of money each year. You can enjoy a comfortable temperature throughout your home without wasting unnecessary heat or energy in any rooms you don’t use or at times when no one’s at home.

Think about corrosion inhibitors

Over time, sludge and limescale builds up inside your central heating system, causing it to run less efficiently.  Corrosion inhibitors protect against the build-up of these substances and encourage a smoother, more efficient system. They also reduce the risk of your heating system deteriorating inside, meaning it will last longer.

Draught-proof your home

It’s all very well your central heating system making your home warm, but it’s essential to make sure this heat doesn’t escape.  Home insulation such as cavity wall and loft insulation reduces heat loss by creating a barrier between warm and cooler areas – keeping you comfortable and saving you cash.

Despite looking after your boiler perfectly, there may come a time that it no longer meets your needs and you have to change it. Before you invest in a new heating system, make sure you understand the benefits of each model so that you can make an informed decision.
