Are Combi Boilers Being Phased Out and What Will Replace Them?

With the climate crisis continuing to take a toll, governments, including our own in the UK, are working to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. This includes the use of traditional gas and combi boilers, as home heating makes up almost 10% of the UK’s total greenhouse emissions. But what exactly is happening?

In this complete guide, the experts at Intergas answer key questions, including ‘are combi boilers being phased out’, ‘when will gas boilers be banned’, ‘why are these measures being taken’ and ‘should you replace your gas boiler’?

Why Are Combi Boilers Being Phased Out?

Under the Future Homes Standard, the UK government requires new-build properties to be fitted with ‘low carbon heating alternatives’. The Standard took effect in 2025, and is part of the government’s efforts to reduce the country’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Environmental concerns are the primary driver behind the changes, which are aimed at taking a chunk out of the sizable contribution home heating makes to the UK’s overall emissions. Gas boilers, including modern combi boilers, burn fossil fuels to generate heat. This involves extracting and processing non-renewable resources and releasing harmful gases into the atmosphere.

The suggested low carbon heating alternatives are systems like heat pumps, which can be powered entirely by renewable electricity. It’s worth noting that the Standard only applies to new-build properties, and doesn’t impact existing installations. Essentially, gas boilers are not being banned, they are being very gradually phased out, starting with new properties.

When Are Combi Boilers Being Phased Out?

So, when are gas boilers being phased out? Combi boilers have effectively already started to be phased out, but only in new build properties. The Future Homes Standard means they can’t be installed in new homes when they are built, but this doesn’t affect older properties.

In the last few years, there have been suggestions that the government might set a phase-out date for all new gas boilers to be banned, with some suspecting gas was to be phased out by 2030 altogether. However, this date was repeatedly pushed back and finally scrapped altogether in early 2026. This means homeowners can continue to fit their homes with their choice of heating system for the foreseeable future.

Because of the current high price of electricity, combi boilers are often a more cost effective means of home heating. So, many homeowners are opting for high-efficiency combi boilers as a way to upgrade their central heating.

Should You Replace Your Gas Boiler By 2030?

Currently, there are no legal requirements for you to replace your existing boiler before 2030 or any other date. However, the rising costs of energy across the board mean that efficiency is the key to keeping your heating bills manageable. Switching to a heat pump or hybrid air source heat pump is one way to maximise efficiency, but for many homes, the most cost-effective solution, both short- and long-term, is a high-efficiency combi boiler.

Modern combi boilers, like the units we sell here at Intergas, are designed to deliver maximum heat with minimum energy usage. They feature advanced heat exchangers to ensure no energy goes to waste and include minimal moving parts to maximise service lives. This has the added benefit of keeping maintenance costs down.

Another way to maximise the efficiency of your boiler when you upgrade is to make sure you have the correct size of boiler for your home and your usage. You can find more information about selecting the right boiler in our complete guide.

What Are The Alternatives to Gas Boilers?

If you are looking to replace your gas boiler, either to reduce your carbon footprint or to get ahead of future legislative changes likely to be introduced as part of the government’s Net Zero strategy, there are a few alternatives you could consider.

Air Source Heat Pumps

Air source heat pumps are the government’s current preferred low carbon heating alternative. They run entirely on electricity, and work by extracting heat from the air outside your home and channelling it inside. It then heats water for your taps and central heating. Air source heat pumps are ideal as a low carbon solution, delivering continuous, reliable heat year-round.

Another alternative is hybrid air source heat pumps. These systems blend heat pumps with a small combi boiler unit. This allows you to heat your home using carbon-free electricity while retaining access to the near-instant hot water that combi boilers deliver.

Ground Source Heat Pumps

Ground source heat pumps work in a similar way to air source heat pumps. The difference, however, is they extract their heat from the ground rather than the air. These systems feature networks of underground pipes that absorb warmth from the soil and use it to provide heat for your hot water and central heating system.

Ground source heat pumps can be more efficient than air source heat pumps, but are more disruptive and costly to install as a result of the need to bury pipes in the ground near your property.

Electric Radiators

A common alternative for smaller properties is electric radiators. Because they don’t rely on fossil fuels, they can be run entirely on renewable energy. However, they are often less efficient than other systems, and could be very costly for larger properties. That being said, in smaller properties, such as studio apartments or annexes, they can be a cost-effective, renewable alternative to heat pumps.

Solar Thermal Panels

Solar thermal panels capture energy from the sun in a similar way to photovoltaic solar panels. But rather than using the energy to generate electricity, they capture heat directly using a specialised fluid. The heat is then used to provide hot water, primarily for taps and outlets, but they can be integrated into central heating systems too.

FAQs About the Gas Boiler Ban

Can I still buy a gas boiler?

You can. Combi boilers are still available for sale, and there is no current date for them to be banned in the UK, meaning they will be available for the foreseeable future.

Are combi boilers being phased out in 2035?

No. There were talks of gas boilers being banned by 2035 as part of the government’s Net Zero strategy. However, this idea was thrown out in early 2026 in response to the rising costs of energy.

What will replace gas boilers?

There are a number of alternatives to gas boilers, but the most popular solution is air source heat pumps. This is the alternative being championed by the government, and there are financial incentives available for those willing to make the switch.

Do I have to replace my current gas boiler?

No, if your existing boiler is in good condition and is reasonably efficient, there’s no need to replace it if you don’t want to. However, if your boiler is older, not performing as well as it used to or running inefficiently, a new boiler could help save you money and reduce your carbon footprint. Alternatively, you could opt for an environmentally-friendly replacement, such as a hybrid solution or an air source heat pump.
