Heat Pump Government Grant: What You Need To Know

Things are changing in the world of heating as we all look to find better, more efficient and more environmentally conscious ways to heat our hot water and homes. In today’s blog post, we’re looking at heat pumps and how a government grant can help you replace your traditional boiler system for a fraction of the usual cost.

Can You Get an Air Source Heat Pump Grant?

Short answer: yes. Price is one of the most critical factors when it comes to updating your boiler system. Thankfully, the government is currently offering heat pump grants via the Boiler Upgrade Scheme to homeowners in England and Wales, on which the information in this blog is based (Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes). The scheme offers a £7,500 grant towards the cost of installing an air source heat pump. The scheme was introduced in April 2022 and has been extended until April 2028.

The aim of this grant is simple: to make switching from a gas, oil or LPG system to a renewable heating method much more affordable. Plus, by replacing your traditional fossil fuel boiler with a heat pump, you can lower both your carbon footprint and your heating bills.

Please note that hybrid heat pumps (where a gas boiler and heat pump work together) are not eligible for this grant, but standalone ground source and air source heat pumps (like the Intergas Xceed Monobloc system) are fully supported by this heat pump government grant.

How To Apply for a Heat Pump Grant in the UK

Applying for the heat pump government grant via the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is straightforward, but there are a few steps to follow to ensure you are eligible. This particular scheme is open to homeowners in England and Wales only. To apply for the grant:

  1.     Check Your Eligibility: You must own your property and be replacing a fossil fuel system, such as gas, oil or LPG, with a full heat pump system – hybrid systems do not qualify.
  2.     Ensure Your Property Has a Valid EPC: You need a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), which must be less than 10 years old and have no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation. To check if you have one, visit this government site.
  3.     Get a Quote from an MCS-Certified Installer: Only Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) accredited installers can apply for the grant on your behalf. Intergas is here to help with this – we’ll put you in touch with an MCS-certified installer when you get in touch.
  4.     Agree on Your Quote and Installation Plan: One of the easiest parts of the heat pump government grant is that your installer will then handle the full application process through Ofgem. Once approved, the system must be installed and commissioned within 120 days.
  5.     Grant deduction: Once approved, the heat pump grant value (up to £7,500) is automatically deducted from your total installation cost.

Intergas works closely with trusted, MCS-certified installers to help guide you through the full application process and ensure every system meets government requirements.

How Much Is the Heat Pump Grant Worth?

The grant is a flat £7,500 towards the cost of your new system, unless your total costs are under this, in which case the total is covered. The £7,500 grant is valid for both air source heat pumps (including our Xceed monobloc air source heat pump) and ground source heat pumps. There is also the option for a biomass boiler, which reduces the grant to £5,000.

Your income or the size and type of your property does not change your eligibility or the amount you get with the grant, as long as all the conditions outlined above are met.

What Does the UK Heat Pump Grant Cover?

Providing the eligibility criteria are met, the heat pump government grant covers part of the upfront cost of a full air source or ground source heat pump installation, including the unit, labour and commissioning the system. The system must meet government efficiency standards and be installed by an MCS-certified installer to qualify.

The scheme does not cover hybrid heat pump systems (where a gas boiler and heat pump work together), social housing installations or any property that has already benefitted from a government grant of this kind. If you have any concerns about whether you qualify, get in touch with  Intergas for dedicated help from an expert engineer. Alternatively, find more about how air source heat pumps work.

FAQs About Heat Pump Grants

Am I eligible for an air source heat pump grant?

If you own your home in England or Wales and are replacing a fossil fuel heating system, such as a gas, oil or LPG system, with a full heat pump installation, you should be eligible. You also need to use an MCS-certified installer and have a valid EPC with no outstanding insulation recommendations.

Are there any other heat pump grant schemes?

In England and Wales, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (currently due to run through to the end of March 2028) is the main form of financial support for air source and ground source heat pump installations. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes, which may include grants or interest-free loans. Check local government websites for details of regional funding options in your area.

What EPC rating is needed for a heat pump grant?

You don’t need a specific rating, but you must have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) that’s less than ten years old and has no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation. Without this, your grant application will not be able to proceed.

What is the government’s boiler upgrade scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is essentially a heat pump government grant designed to help homeowners replace traditional fossil fuel heating systems with renewable alternatives. It provides a £7,500 grant towards an air source or ground source heat pump, or £5,000 for a biomass boiler. Almost 95,000 applications had been made to the scheme by the end of August 2025.

The grant is applied directly by your MCS-certified installer, so the discount is automatically taken off your total installation cost. This makes it a relatively easy grant to get when you upgrade to a qualifying system and meet the other criteria detailed on the government website.

Can I get a heat pump grant for any property?

No. The scheme applies to most existing homes, but not every property qualifies. You can’t get a grant for social housing, most new builds (that are still currently being built) or properties that have already received government funding for a similar system. Your property must have a valid EPC and meet certain energy efficiency standards. An MCS-certified installer, which Intergas can put you in touch with, can check your eligibility and advise whether your home is suitable for a full air source heat pump installation.
