Boiler Upgrade Scheme

As you know the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) ended on 31st March and was replaced on 1st April by the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). So just how helpful is this new Government scheme going to be? Unlike the RHI and the Feed-in Tariff scheme (FITs), which were long-term incentives where the homeowner would receive regular payments, BUS is more limited. Grants of up to £6,000 will be paid (in vouchers) to the installer of the heat pump (air source or ground source and biomass boilers), but the fund of £450 million will only help towards the cost of installing 90,000 heat pumps over three years – far fewer than the 600,000 a year target announced by Boris Johnson in 2020. The homeowner can’t apply for the grant, it has to come via the installer who must have the MCS qualification to be eligible. Applications for homeowners open on 23 May 2022.
